Asian Pears

By September 20, 2013Fruit, Storage, Tips

General Info

Native to China, Japan, and Korea, these crunchy, delicate-tasting fruits are also known as apple pears, though they are not related to apples. They are crisp, juicy, and always sweet.

Serving Suggestions

Asian pears are excellent out of hand, and can also be used in tarts or crisps and baked goods, or added to a stir-fry. Grate Asian pears for use in a slaw, or add slices or cubes to fresh veggie or fruit salads. Asian pears can be used as a substitute for apples in most recipes.

Storage

Asian pears will stay good for a week or more at room temperature, or for several months in the fridge, like an apple. They are ripe when they lose the green undertone in the skin, develop a sweet aroma,  and are still very firm—they do not soften like traditional pears.

Tips

Asian pears are very delicate and their thin skin can bruise easily.

Asian pears are ripe while still very firm.
