General Info

Most of the figs that come in your Abundant Harvest produce boxes are the Black Mission variety. This was the first variety of fig cultivated in California by Spanish missionaries in the late 1700s.  The purple-black skin of the Mission fig is edible, though some prefer to peel the fruit starting at the stem end and peeling downward in strips.

Storage

Figs are delicate, and should be among the first items consumed from your box. They are highly perishable and bruise easily. Your fresh figs should last a week to ten days unwashed, stored in a single layer in sealed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator, or in the produce basket in the crisper drawer. Just remember to give them plenty of room for air circulation and eat them quickly!
