Gala Apples

By September 23, 2013Fruit, Storage, Tips

General Info

The Gala apple was discovered in New Zealand in the 1930s as a cross between the Golden Delicious and Kidd’s Orange Red varieties. It is one of the most popular apple varieties worldwide. It has a mildly sweet taste with a crisp yellow flesh.

Serving Suggestions

The Gala has a thinner skin than most other apples and is excellent out of hand. Use it in chopped, green, or fruit salads or added in slices to sandwiches or burgers. It can also be used in cooked recipes, applesauce, apple juice, and all types of baking.

Storage

Apples are traditionally a storage crop. They will keep well in the crisper drawer of your fridge, in a green produce bag, or in an unsealed plastic bag in the fridge for 6 to 8 weeks.
