We all dream of lazy mornings where breakfast includes a chance to relax, cook, read the news, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with two hands. The reality is that most of us don’t have time for this – whether it’s that early morning meeting, getting the kids off to school, or the need to miss rush hour traffic – lazy breakfasts are usually for the weekends. This doesn’t mean that you are relegated to the “instant” section at the grocery store. No no. DIY instant oatmeal packets are simple and easy, and they take the uncertainty out of the ingredients found in store bought versions. 15-20 mins in the kitchen prepping these individual go-to breakfast packs means healthy, yummy breakfast in just a few minutes Mon – Fri.
What You Need:
5 cups Old Fashioned Oats or Instant Oats (go gluten free if you need)
1/2 cup of ground oats
Assortment of Mix – ins (see flavor combos below) like nuts, raisins, freeze dried fruit, spices
1/2 -1 Tbs Brown or White Sugar (optional) per cup of oatmeal
5 Plastic baggies or Tupperware
Step 1. Combine one cup of oats and 2 Tbs of ground oats (to make simply toss whole oats into your food processor for about 30 secs) into each plastic bag – you will have 5 bags, one for each day of the week!
Step 2. Add 1/2 to 1 Tbs of brown sugar to each bag
Step 3. Add your favorite spices. Cinnamon, Nutmeg, a dash of salt. You can add freeze-dried or dehydrated fruit here as well (check out these apples, blueberries, and grapes from Homegrown Organics available as add-ons!)
Step 4. Label your flavor combinations and set aside.
Step 5. Wake up, toss your individual packages into an 8oz ramekin and add enough water to fully cover the oats – add more water for a creamier oatmeal. Toss in the microwave for 1 min or more depending upon how soft you desire your oatmeal.
Step. 6 Add in your additional mix ins – fresh fruit, maple syrup, nuts and more!
