Kitchen Basics: Making Flour Tortillas

By November 10, 2016Kitchen Basics

Some foods are so simple to make that when we figure out how to make them at home we often wonder what took us so long. Tortillas are one of those things that fall into that category. So easy to make, it’s kind of a no brainer. Here are some simple tips for making flour tortillas at home, and some yummy recipes where fresh tortillas will take your dish from meh to delish.

What you need:

  • 3 cups flour or whole wheat flour
  • 4 to 6 Tbs vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • A large hot griddle for cooking
  • Rolling pin or Tortilla press

Makes approx 8-10 small tortillas

Here’s how to do it:

In a large bowl mix flour (we used whole wheat), salt, and baking powder.

Add shortening a few tablespoons at a time and mix by hand until crumbly.

Slowly add warm water and mix until dough starts to stick together.

Form dough into a large ball and allow to rest for 5 – 10 minutes.

Form dough into smaller balls and allow to rest for another 10 minutes. Meanwhile heat a griddle to medium-high heat and spray with a little cooking spray.

After the dough has rested, flour your cutting board and roll out each ball very thin with rolling pin (using a tortilla press will help – they work much better with corn tortillas, but a rolling pin is best for making them thin and stretchy).

Place tortillas on heated griddle and wait for them to bubble up.

Flip when bubbles appear throughout, they should be slightly browned.

Serve warm!
